1911年，林語(yǔ)堂廈門(mén)尋源書(shū)院畢業(yè)，以優(yōu)異成績(jī)考入上海圣約翰大學(xué)。1916年大學(xué)畢業(yè)，到北京清華學(xué)校任教。

1918年在《新青年》發(fā)表第一篇學(xué)術(shù)論文《漢字索引制說(shuō)明》，受到蔡元培、錢(qián)玄同重視和高度評(píng)價(jià)。關(guān)心文學(xué)革命，支持白話文。

1919年獲半官費(fèi)留美助學(xué)金，與廖翠鳳結(jié)婚后即攜夫人赴美國(guó)，先在美國(guó)哈佛大學(xué)，后又至德國(guó)萊比錫大學(xué)深造，研究文學(xué)、語(yǔ)言學(xué)，獲哈佛大學(xué)碩士、萊比錫大學(xué)博士學(xué)位。


In 1911, Lin Yutang graduated from Xiamen Xunyuan Academy and was admittedwith excellent scores into Saint John's University in Shanghai. In 1916,aftergraduation, he went to Peking to become a teacher at Tsinghua School.In 1918, he published his first academic paper “An Explanation on IndexingChinese Characters" in the magazine New Youth. It was considered very significantand highly praised by Cai Yuanpei and Qian Xuantong. He attached importance to thereform in literature and advocated the colloquialization of Chinese.
In 1919, he was granted with a half scholarship by the government and went to theUS for further study together with his wife Liao Cuifeng after their wedding. Hestudied literature and linguistics first at Harvard University, and later at the Universityof Leipzig in Germany, He obtained a Master degree from Harvard University and adoctoral degree at the University of Leipzig.
