山鄉(xiāng)孩子
林語堂祖籍地是天寶五里沙，出生地為平和坂仔。
祖父于清咸豐十年（公元1860年）被太平天國軍隊抓為挑夫，從此失蹤。
父親林至誠在五里沙度過青少年，曾做過小販，24歲入教會神學院，后成為牧師，被派往平和坂仔傳教。母親楊順命是出身貧寒、老實忠厚的農家婦女。林家兄弟姐妹8人，林語堂排行第七（兄弟排行第五）。

閩南的山川風情給少年林語堂留下深刻印象，他說自己“天真、率直、自然”的人格來自大山，自稱“山鄉(xiāng)的孩子”。
1900年在教會辦的銘新小學讀書，1904年隨三哥到廈門鼓浪嶼讀書，三哥在尋源書院就讀，林語堂入養(yǎng)元小學，小學畢業(yè)后亦入尋源書院讀中學。

Li Yutang' s Ancestral home was at Wulisha, Tianbao, and he was born at Banzi,Pinghe.His grandfather was captured by the army of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom in1860 and forced to be their porter. He never returned.

Lin Yutang' s father Lin Zhicheng spent his childhood and youth in Wulisha,once worked as a pedlar, was admitted into the divinity school at 24, and later becamea pastor. He was sent to Banzi,Pinghe to carry on missionary work. Lin Yutang smother Yang Shunming was born into a poor family and was an honest countrywoman. There were eight sons and daughters in the family, and Lin Yutang was theseventh child and fifth son.

As the mountains and rivers of southern Fujian left a deep impression on LinYutang during his childhood,he once said that his “innocent,candid,and natural"character originated from the big mountains, and he regarded himself as a "boy ofmountains. ”
In 1900, he studied at Mingxin Primary School,which was managed by a church.In 1904,he went to Gulangyu, Xiamen together with his third brother to continue hiseducation. His brother studied at Xunyuan Academy and he went to YangyuanPrimary School. After his graduation, he also entered Xunyuan Academy.
